Abstract

Purpose: This study was to investigate the degree of the sexual harassment awareness and sexual harassment experience about higher grade students in primary school.

Methods: The subjects were consisted of 467 elementary school (228 5th grader, 239 6th grader) who were attending at the four elementary school in Gwangju city from May 15 to May 1, 2006.

Results: 1) Awareness of sexual harassment, on a total scale of 10 rated an average of 8.02¡¾3.07, showing a high percentage of sexual harassment awareness. If the differences in awareness levels are observed according to common characteristics, awareness appeared to be notably high in cases of higher grade levels, internet installment, no experience seeing obscene material, and experience receiving sex education. 2) If the actual conditions of sexual harassment experiences are observed, sexual harassment experience as a victim turned out to be 35.8% while sexual harassment experience as an offender was 17.6%, showing that experience as a victim was at a higher rate than experience as an offender. Sexual harassment victimization showed to be highest in cases of experience seeing obscene material(xÉÖ=42.904, p=.000), bullying by peers(xÉÖ=4.458, p=.035), or no sex education(xÉÖ=12.651, p=.000). Sexual harassment offender showed to be highest in cases of experience seeing obscene material (xÉÖ=49.179, p=.000), internet installment(xÉÖ=6.798, p=.000), or no sex education(xÉÖ=58.450, p=.000).

Conclusion: the awareness level of elementary school students about sexual harassment assessed considerable. And, they also experienced several types of sexual harassment, though not too much. Therefore, compatible education program let them able to protect themselves from sexual harassment should be developed and applied even in early school age.
